Jump to Recipe Jump to Audio Print Recipe

Some days you want to create a little extra fun at the table, and this fun rainbow fruit tray is a simple, quick way to do just that. Just grab some of your favorite fruits in different colors of the rainbow and arrange them in the shape of a rainbow.

A fruit platter arranged in a rainbow pattern on a white serving tray, with yogurt dips on either side, against a white tile background with a decorative napkin, and 'the default cook' watermark at the bottom right.

Why You'll Love This Fresh Fruit Rainbow:

  • Simple ingredients- All we need is fresh fruit in a variety of colors along with yogurt, honey, and vanilla.
  • Kid Friendly- Rainbows make everything more fun, even healthy snacks. Little ones can even help assemble and go over their colors!
  • Versatile- Whether you're celebrating St Patrick's Day, hosting a baby shower, or just looking for a refreshing snack, this simple rainbow snack tray fits the bill. The best part is that you can swap out fruits based on preference or season, so there are countless ways to customize your fruit board.
  • Healthy- Especially with a yogurt dip as the clouds, this is basically a deconstructed yogurt parfait that's heavy on the fruit. And eating a variety of fruits is good for us!

Let's Get Started! Here's What You'll Need:

Assorted ingredients for a fruit platter spread out on a granite countertop, each labeled: Clementines, Blackberries, Green Grapes, Greek Yogurt, Vanilla, Honey, Blueberries, Banana, and Strawberries.

Ingredients:

We need components of our rainbow, and our clouds.

For our rainbow, we're going to pick a fruit for each color of the rainbow, whipping out that old elementary school memory trick ROY G BIV.

  • Red: Strawberries, though you could instead use raspberries, watermelon slices, red grapes, or pomegranate seeds.
  • Orange: Clementines or mandarin oranges, but any oranges would be great as would nectarines, cantaloupe, apricots, or peaches.
  • Yellow: Bananas are my kids favorite, you could also use pineapple chunks, golden apples, or mango.
  • Green: Green grapes are what I'm using here, green pears, green apples, kiwi, or honeydew melon are great options as well.
  • Blue: Blueberries are the most obvious fruit here, concord grapes are another blue choice.
  • Indigo/Violet: Blackberries are what I'm using, plums, black or purple grapes, or dark cherries are other fruits that are generally easy to find.

For our clouds, we want something white or off-white that pairs well with fruit. I'm using a yogurt dip but if you can also opt for a cream cheese fruit dip, mini marshmallows, hard boiled eggs, or white cheese like brie, babybel, or mozzarella pearls.

  • Yogurt: Greek yogurt has a nice thickness for dipping.
  • Honey: Maple syrup would be another great option.
  • Vanilla: Just a touch for flavor.

Equipment:

For the yogurt dip we'll need two small bowls to display the dip in, and a spoon for stirring everything together. You can eyeball the honey and vanilla or use measuring spoons, and I just stir right in the yogurt container but if you're using yogurt from a larger container you might want another bowl.

We'll also of course need a display board for our rainbow, and another cutting board and a knife for slicing our fruits. If you want to wash and slice most of the fruit ahead that makes assembly a lot faster day of. I recommend doing that in a bowl with some vinegar water and then dry it well with kitchen towels or paper towels.

How to Make This Simple Rainbow Fruit Platter

Step 1: Wash or Rinse Your Fruit

The first thing we're going to do is wash our fruit. You can always do a basic water rinse, but if you're preparing the fruit a bit ahead I find it lasts better with a vinegar wash. Just add a few tablespoons of vinegar to tap water in a medium or large bowl and let your fruit sit for about 5 minutes, and taste a bite to see if you can taste the vinegar. With just 1-2 tablespoons you shouldn't, but if you poured a bit more you may need to do a quick water rinse before drying.

Step 2: Slice & Peel the Fruit

We want to slice our strawberries and larger fruits like pineapple into bite sized pieces, and peel the oranges. If you're doing this ahead of time, be sure to store your sliced fruit in an airtight container in the fridge. For fruits like banana that will brown hold off until just before assembling your rainbow fruit plate.

Step 3: Make The Yogurt Fruit Dip

Grab your yogurt and if you're using a single serve container, just pour in your honey and vanilla right in there. Give it a good stir until well combined, and then place about half into each small bowl.

Bottom left: Stirring the honey and vanilla into the yogurt. Bottom right: The yogurt mixture fully combined. Each step is labeled with instructions 'Add honey,' 'Add vanilla,' 'Stir,' and 'Until smooth.

Step 4: Arrange Fruit & Clouds

Starting with the red fruit, make a thin arch from one side of the rainbow up to the top of the board and down to the other side. Be sure to leave room for your clouds at the bottom. Remember you can always go back and fill in, but we want to be sure there is enough space for all of the colors, so don't make any of your fruit layers too thick.

Next grab your orange fruit and make that layer just under the red. Then continue with your yellow, green, blue, and purple to create your rainbow. If there's empty space between the layers you can go back and add a bit more. You can see on the finished rainbow that I stacked the banana slices on top of themselves to get the whole banana on the board.

Step 5: Serve & Enjoy

If you have leftovers you can either cover your fruit rainbow tray with plastic wrap, or for easier storage place all leftover fruit in an airtight container. I tell my kids the leftovers are rainbow fruit salad.

FAQs

How can I make this more themed?

If you're serving this as part of a St. Patrick's Day celebration, it's fun to add some chocolate coins or another fun item as a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

How do I prevent the fruit from browning?

If you're using fruit that browns easily like bananas or apples, either cut them just before assembling and serving, or you can lightly brush them with a bit of lemon juice. You can also opt for types of fruit that doesn't brown as easily- of the fruits I'm using here only the banana is going to be an issue, so my personal preference would be to swap that for pineapple or mango if I was making it as a party platter.

Can I prepare the fruit board in advance?

Yes and no. It's a lot easier to transport cut fruit and assemble just before serving, but if not using fruit that browns easily you could prepare the whole thing ahead and cover it with plastic wrap. In that case I would recommend drying the fruit well so you don't have a lot of fruit juice, as the colors of the fruit might bleed together a bit.
